Matt emulsion explained.

Matt emulsion is the default wall paint in most UK homes, and “white emulsion” is one of the most-searched terms in decorating — but there's a real difference between a basic contract matt and a proper vinyl matt, and it shows on the wall.

Matt vs vinyl matt.

Plain matt emulsion has a flat, chalky finish and marks easily — it's cheap and fine for ceilings, but poor for busy rooms. Vinyl matt emulsion (the kind behind most branded tins, including Covaplus vinyl matt) adds a binder that gives a slightly tougher, more washable surface while keeping that flat, no-shine look. For living rooms, hallways and bedrooms, vinyl matt is almost always the better choice.

Why 'white' isn't just white.

Dulux white emulsion, B&Q's own-brand white and Screwfix white emulsion all sit at slightly different points — some brilliant white, some a warmer or cooler off-white, and opacity varies between ranges too. On a repaint over an existing colour, a cheaper white can need an extra coat to cover evenly, so the tin price isn't the whole cost once labour and coats are factored in.

How many coats, and where matt falls down.

Expect two full coats over a primed or previously painted wall, three over bare plaster or a big colour change. Matt's weakness is durability — it marks on contact and can't be scrubbed hard without burnishing (leaving a shiny patch), which is why kitchens, hallways and kids' rooms are often better suited to a washable or scrubbable finish instead.

Getting a flawless matt finish.

A good matt result is about prep and application as much as the paint — filled and sanded walls, a mist coat on new plaster, and even rolling to avoid patchy sheen differences once dry.
