Gold wall paint.

Gold wall paint splits opinion — done badly it's brassy and blotchy, done well it's warm, glamorous and surprisingly liveable. The difference is almost always in the type of gold and the preparation, not the price of the tin.

Metallic gold vs warm-gold emulsion.

There are two very different products people mean by “gold wall paint”. True metallic golds contain fine reflective flakes and are usually rolled or sprayed over a tinted basecoat; they shimmer as the light moves and are best kept to a single feature wall. Warm-gold emulsions, by contrast, are ordinary matt or soft-sheen paints in ochre, honey and antique-gold tones — far more forgiving and easy to live with across a whole room.

If you want drama, metallic; if you want warmth, a warm-gold emulsion. Knowing which you're after before you buy saves the classic mistake of coating four walls in a shimmer finish that overwhelms the room.

The rooms gold suits best.

Gold flatters warm, low-light spaces — dining rooms, snugs, hallways and the wall behind a bed — where it catches lamplight in the evening. It pairs beautifully with deep greens, navy, charcoal and plum, and lifts natural materials like wood and brass. Avoid large north-facing rooms with cool daylight, where gold can turn flat and yellowish.

Getting an even finish (the hard part).

Metallic golds are unforgiving: every roller mark, patchy area and bit of surface texture shows in raking light. That means proper prep — filled, sanded and a tinted basecoat — then thin, even coats laid off in one direction, ideally sprayed for a flawless result. Warm-gold emulsions behave like any quality matt: two coats over a sound, primed surface.

This is the one colour where a professional finish really shows. If you want the metallic look without the streaks, it's worth having a decorator spray it — we're happy to quote a single feature wall as easily as a whole room.
